When you’re getting started as a soccer player, you might think that soccer cleats seem pretty expensive, particularly when compared to standard sneakers. So, it begs the question – can you play soccer without cleats?

Here, we explain the circumstances in which you can play soccer without cleats and introduce the most appropriate footwear for playing soccer on different surfaces.

So, can you play soccer without cleats?

You can play soccer without cleats, and your choice of footwear should depend on the surface that you’re playing on. Soccer can be played on grass, artificial turf, and hard surfaces like concrete and gym floors, so it’s vital to select the correct footwear for the surface that you’re playing on.

In the following sections, we introduce you to the ideal footwear for playing soccer on grass, on artificial turf, and hard surfaces to ensure that you have footwear that is safe and comfortable for the surface that you’re planning to play on.

The ideal footwear for soccer on grass

The main reason why cleats are such a good option for soccer is that they provide the ideal level of grip when it comes to playing on grass. Soccer cleats – often referred to as studs or blades – enable players to keep their footing when playing on slippery surfaces.

If you’ve ever tried to play soccer in a pair of sneakers with flat soles, you will realize that it’s really difficult to stay on your feet! This is because there is no traction on the under soles, and you find it really difficult to change direction without falling over.

Therefore, if you’re playing soccer on a grass surface, you should really invest in a pair of cleats with studs. The good news is that you can buy soccer cleats that don’t need to cost a fortune, which is a viable option for all players, no matter how frequently you play the game.

Our recent article introducing metal stud soccer cleats is a helpful read, particularly if you’re looking for the best soccer footwear to wear on a grass surface.

The ideal footwear for soccer on artificial turf

To some people’s surprise, soccer is often played on fake grass, sometimes known as artificial turf. Synthetic pitches are common at all levels of the game, from amateur leagues to the professional game.

When you play soccer on artificial turf, you need to change your footwear accordingly. Metal cleats are not permitted on such surfaces and are actually dangerous, as the surface is incapable of taking the stud.

Therefore, if you’re planning to play soccer on artificial turf, you should invest in a pair of molded soccer studs. This type of footwear comprises small, rounded studs that provide sufficient levels of grip on artificial surfaces and prevent you from slipping over.

Again, we wouldn’t recommend wearing standard, flat-footed sneakers when playing soccer on artificial turf. This is because it’s really difficult to retain your footing when playing on such surfaces, which will impact your overall performance during the game.

The ideal footwear for soccer on hard surfaces

It’s also possible to play soccer on hard surfaces, like tarmac or concrete, or an indoor surface, like a gym hall. In this instance, it’s perfectly safe and appropriate to wear sneakers, as they’re ideal for such a surface.

You can also wear flat-soled soccer boots – like those that are suitable for artificial pitches – when playing on hard surfaces, but you just need to be mindful of how the shoes feel when you’re playing on concrete or a gym hall.

After all, you don’t want to get blisters when playing soccer, so you need to make sure that you wear the appropriate footwear for each surface.

What’s the best footwear for soccer?

Soccer cleats come with different soles, so you need to select the right studs for the surface that you’re playing on.

As explained in the sections above, the best footwear for soccer depends on the surface that you’re playing on. If you’re playing on grass, soccer cleats are your best option, as they’re safe and provide you with a decent grip.

You also need to think about the weather when you’re playing on grass. When playing soccer in the rain, it makes sense to wear metal studs or blades that are capable of penetrating the turf. Wearing small, rounded studs won’t be sufficient.

Conversely, when playing soccer on harder ground, which includes dry grass, you might be better suited to molded studs, which are also a good option when you’re playing soccer on fake grass and artificial surfaces.

Last but not least, when playing soccer on hard surfaces like a gym floor or tarmac, a standard pair of flat-soled sneakers will do the trick.

What happens if you choose the wrong footwear for soccer?

It’s really important to get your footwear right from a safety perspective. If you play soccer without cleats on grass, you risk losing your footing more often, which is dangerous when you go into challenges with the opposition and increases the risk of injury.

Also, if you wear studs on hard ground, you are likely to develop painful blisters, which will affect your comfort as well as your ability to play soccer to the best of your ability.

It’s also important to consider the rules and regulations regarding footwear. When playing on artificial turf, for instance, you might not be permitted to play in studded soccer cleats, as each venue sets its own rules and regulations regarding what type of footwear is appropriate.

Therefore, you need to consider the type of surface that you’re playing soccer on and buy the most appropriate footwear, as guided by the sections in this article.

The verdict: Can you play soccer without cleats?

The bottom line is that you absolutely can play soccer without cleats, but you need to think carefully about the surface that you’re playing on. Soccer cleats are designed to be comfortable, safe, and appropriate when playing the game on grass.

But if you’re playing on artificial turf or hard surfaces, standard soccer cleats aren’t appropriate, and you should buy flat-soled footwear that is much more appropriate for the surface in question.

  1. My son is 12 years old and very tall with very big feet. He is technically a size 15, but in soccer shoes it doesn’t matter be cause I found a size 15 and it’s not long enough. We can handle a narrow shoe. Do you have any recommendations! He plays on regular grass. Can he wear a football shoe or something like that for size?

    1. The key thing with buying cleats is safety and it depends on whether the surface is wet/dry. It’s really difficult and can be dangerous to play soccer on wet grass with sneakers, and equally, it’s unsafe to play on hard surfaces with blades & metal cleats. Football shoes/cleats aren’t ideal for soccer because of the extra toe cleat. Your best bet is to take your son to a sports shop for a fitting and see what works for his feet. Best, Justin.
